A recently-revealed studies by Facebook of "emotional contagion" among its users triggered both legal and ethical concerns about privacy, transparency and respondent consent. User studies by OKCupid spawned similar concerns, but the cases were very different. I discussed these and other ethical concerns with Jim Bryson (20/20 Research), particularly as they regard passive observational research, following his participation in a panel, "MR Professionals in a Live Research Ethics Debate," at the 2014 Corporate Researchers Conference (CRC).
