The insights industry relies upon accurate census data more than most, so the Insights Association urges you to help get out the count this year.

Your support for IA helped ensure we could advocate for and win full Census Bureau funding over the past decade to execute a complete count, but now it is your turn. You and your marketing research and data analytics company/organization can make a difference by encouraging your employees, partners, customers and consumers to respond to the 2020 Census.

  • Why we care: Census data underpins every statistically representative study in America, including other government surveys. The trickle-down impact of an inaccurate 2020 Census would be severe -- and last the whole decade.
  • Why EVERYONE cares: In addition to our industry's work, 2020 Census data will determine the distribution and drawing of electoral districts, help guide the geographic distribution of $1.5 trillion in federal spending annually, and drive most decision-making for the private and public sectors.

Most American households will receive information from the Census Bureau, as soon as mid-March, inviting them to complete their questionnaires. The info will be sent by mail (or delivered by a census worker in some rural and remote areas). Messages from you and your company/organization should explain why the census is important for various communities and audiences and encourage them to complete their questionnaires in a timely fashion.

IA recommends the following get-out-the-count resources, including pre-fab social media posts, templates for your newsletters/emails, and a wide variety of other resources and ways to help get out the count.

You should also consider getting involved with your local complete count committees (anywhere your business or organization has a presence), which utilize local knowledge, influence and resources to educate communities and promote census response through locally-based targeted outreach from trusted local sources.

Social media

The Census Bureau has suggested a few standard posts you can share via your social channels:

The Census Bureau also offer a pair of cards that are eminently shareable -- card 1; card 2 – and any of the 2020 Census radio or video PSAs may be worth sharing, as well as some of the Bureau’s outreach materials (although they’re usually pdfs, not fun graphics or video).

You can complete the questionnaire online, by mail or over the phone. It is safe and private. In fact, federal law prohibits anyone at the Census Bureau from sharing personal census information, with violations resulting in stiff penalties and jail time. The questionnaire is short and only asks for basic information (e.g., age, sex, race, type of housing, etc.) for all people living in your household. It does not ask for sensitive information like social security numbers, immigration status or bank account information.
